In the serene embrace of Bhutan’s Mongar district lies Aja Nye, a remote village that had long remained untouched by the conveniences of modern life. However, a transformative initiative has recently brightened the lives of its residents – a solar electrification project that not only illuminates homes but also brings newfound hope and prosperity to this community. The Bhutan Foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Government of Bhutan, Bhutan for Life, Bhutan Ecological Society, and the UNDP Small Grants Program, has achieved a remarkable feat by successfully completing and commissioning this innovative project.

Project at a glance

The solar electrification project in Aja Nye is not just a technological advancement; it is a beacon of sustainable development and community empowerment. With a capacity of 30kW, the solar plant stands as a testament to Bhutan’s commitment to harnessing clean energy sources for the well-being of its people and the environment. The project’s completion and testing phase, spanning from October to November 2022, marked a turning point for the village. The project was officially commissioned in December 2022, heralding a new era for the residents of Aja Nye.

Impact on the community

Imagine life without electricity – no lights to study by, no refrigeration for perishable goods, and limited access to communication tools. This was the reality for the 24 households in Aja Nye before the solar electrification project. With the installation of the solar plant, a dramatic transformation has taken place. Light spills from windows into the night, powered by the inexhaustible energy of the sun. Children now have the opportunity to study after dark, enabling them to pursue education with renewed enthusiasm. Families can store food without fear of spoilage, reducing food waste and ensuring better nutrition. The community is now able to charge essential devices, fostering better connectivity and information access.

“The advent of electricity has truly illuminated our lives, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have generously supported and donated to make this possible,”

This accomplishment would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of key partners and stakeholders. The Royal Government of Bhutan’s unwavering commitment to sustainable development laid the foundation for the project. Bhutan for Life, an organization dedicated to conserving the country’s unique biodiversity, recognized the potential of clean energy in aligning with its mission and lent their support. The Bhutan Ecological Society contributed their expertise, ensuring that the project’s environmental impact was minimal. The UNDP Small Grants Program provided crucial financial support, turning a vision into reality.

A model of sustainable progress

The Aja Nye solar electrification project serves as a model for sustainable progress, demonstrating how innovation and collaboration can uplift marginalized communities while safeguarding the environment. This project embodies Bhutan’s holistic approach to development, where economic growth is balanced with cultural preservation and environmental stewardship. As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and energy security, Aja Nye stands as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication, foresight, and unity.

Call to action: Lighting up futures

As the sun rises over Aja Nye, its rays now symbolize more than just natural light – they represent hope, empowerment, and a brighter future.
